Gastronomy
Skiathos has always been blessed with a rich culinary tradition — one that continues to thrive today. In earlier times, fishermen would trade their daily catch for farmers’ vegetables and olive oil, creating a unique cuisine that beautifully combined the flavors of the sea with the island’s wild greens.
Seafood stews (stifado)
Made with dentex, groupers, anglerfish, and other local species — were often prepared with courgettes and mountain greens. The locals called crustaceans and lobsters “tsoflia,” a nod to their hard shells and modest meat, requiring many to satisfy a hungry appetite. Chards, sow thistles, chervils, and a variety of wild herbs were skillfully blended with seafood, enhancing the island’s natural aromas and flavors.
The rocky coves and islets surrounding Skiathos are rich fishing grounds. You’ll find fish near Lalaria, around the islets, Tsougkrias, and the Kastro area. Surface-swimming fish perfect for soups and grilling, stonefish for frying, as well as squid, langoustines, shrimp, lobster, limpets, and oysters — all sunbathing on the nets, ready to grace the island’s tables.
