Nature
Skiathos stands out as one of Greece’s officially recognized Landscapes of National Value, offering a rare blend of spectacular beaches, dense forests, scenic walking paths, traditional architecture, and important historical landmarks. All of these are part of a globally acknowledged natural environment that includes several protected areas — essential highlights for every visitor.
Natura 2000 Protected Area
As part of the European Union’s efforts to protect biodiversity, the Natura 2000 network includes areas that shelter endangered species and important habitats. On Skiathos, the “Koukounaries and surrounding marine area” has been designated as a Natura 2000 zone, covering 88 hectares.
This unique site is the only coastal pine forest (stone pine and Aleppo pine) on a Mediterranean island. It includes the Strofylia Forest and extends to the adjacent beach and sea — a marine area reaching 20 meters in depth. Half of the zone lies underwater, while the rest is bordered by local roadways to the north, east, and west.
Aesthetic Forest of Skiathos
Skiathos also hosts one of Greece’s officially declared Aesthetic Forests — protected zones celebrated for their natural beauty, ecological value, and recreational importance. Nearly two-thirds of the island (around 30 square kilometers) are covered in Aleppo pine, stone pine, and evergreen broadleaf trees, forming a majestic green landscape that has been protected since 1973.
Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB)
Greece recognizes Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) based on their scenic, cultural, and environmental significance. These zones often include historic sites, archaeological interest, or traditional character.
Skiathos is home to two such areas:
- Koukounaries Bay, a stunning natural bay embraced by golden sand and forest.
- The Evangelistria Monastery, a historic and spiritual site nestled in lush surroundings.
Wetlands
Three precious wetland ecosystems on Skiathos have been placed under strict protection:
- Vromolimnos (1.9 hectares)
- Platanias (3 hectares)
- Tsougkrias, the verdant islet across from the Old Port
These areas play a vital role in preserving biodiversity and supporting migratory bird species.
Wildlife Refuges
Two zones on Skiathos are officially designated as Wildlife Refuges, ensuring the preservation of both terrestrial and marine ecosystems:
- Kechria (172 hectares)
- Koukounaries (16 hectares)
These areas support breeding, feeding, and sheltering grounds for wild animals, birds, and plants.
Surrounding Islets
Several small islets east of Skiathos belong to its municipality. These include:
- Aspronisi, Tsougkriaki, Maragkos, and Arkos (known for its charming beach tavern and untouched nature)
- Repi Islet, home to a historic lighthouse built in 1914, now under restoration as a listed Cultural Heritage Monument
The jewel of the surrounding islets is Tsougkrias — a 1.14 km² paradise of pine trees, exotic beaches, and golden sand. Recognized as both a wetland and a bird habitat, Tsougkrias feels like a hidden tropical escape and is a favorite summer destination for both locals and visitors.
